Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
The city of Coeur d'Alene is located along the western slope of the Rockies. The presence of Coeur d'Alene Lake and Hayden Lake, the mountains, and rural population all blend to give us a vacation resort atmosphere. Leisure activities include boating, fishing, hunting, skiing and golf. Farming, forestry, tourism and services are our main income producers. We are the central location for a major hospital and a junior college. With about 60% of our students born outside of Idaho, our new residents cite the "quality of life" as their reason for moving. We have many retired persons and a large summer population of out-of-state lakeshore owners.
Coeur d‘Alene High School
Coeur d'Alene High School is one of two public high schools serving the communities of Coeur d'Alene, Dalton Gardens and Hayden Lake. Our high school has approximately 1,500 students and is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. We have 70 faculty members, four guidance counselors, one Student Assistance Counselor and four administrators assigned to our school.
Advanced Placement classes are taught at CHS. Students can enroll in individual classes or they can take a series of courses which will lead to an advanced diploma.
Honors classes are offered in freshman through junior years in English, U.S. History, World History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Humanities. Advanced Placement classes are offered in U.S. History, and Physics.
Coeur d'Alene High School is on the semester system (two semesters per year) with one (1) credit earned per class per semester. Each class meets daily for 18 weeks. Coeur d'Alene School District has the 90% attendance rule. On the 10th day of absence in any class (per semester) credit is lost. When credit is lost due to excessive absenteeism, the student must take and pass a benchmark exam to receive the grade and credit earned.
All Coeur d’Alene High School students are also asked to complete an extensive Senior Project including a paper, presentation, research and mentorship.
Coeur d'Alene High School offers an extensive co-curricular activities program. Opportunities for participation exist in both athletic and non-athletic venues. Athletic activities include football, cross country, soccer, volleyball, swimming, lacrosse, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, tennis, golf and softball. Non-athletic activities include music, debate, speech, drama, cheerleading, dance, forestry, scholastic team and a variety of clubs.
Coeur d'Alene High School is a member of the Idaho High School Activities Association and is classified as 5A, the largest school designation.
Dual Credit through North Idaho College
Dual Credit is a program that provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses while they are still in high school. Students may receive high school and college credit for completed classes.
Students may take elective courses or they may take courses that will fulfill high school graduation requirements. Credits from North Idaho College (NIC) are transferable to all Idaho state public colleges and universities according to the guidelines of the receiving institution. Transfers to private and out-of-state colleges/universities are subject to the transfer policy of those institutions.
To be eligible for Dual Credit students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, be at least 16 years of age, and must have successfully completed at least one-half of the high school graduation requirements.
In the Dual Credit program, students have the opportunity to experience what college is like while still enrolled in high school. This could help students as they make the transition from home to a college away-from-home and in making future educational plans.
Students are required to take certain classes each year and may supplement their program of study with a variety of available courses to challenge as well as assist students in meeting their personal goals. Some examples of course offerings at Coeur d’Alene High School include:
